We are looking for a Lead Backend Engineer to join Deliveroo’s Logistics Platform team. You will own the architecture and delivery of systems that process millions of orders weekly across 10 countries. This is a high-impact technical leadership role where you’ll be as comfortable writing production code as you are setting architectural direction.

What you’ll do

• Lead the design and implementation of distributed backend services handling high-throughput, low-latency workloads
• Mentor a team of 5 engineers — conducting code reviews, pair programming, and 1-to-1s
• Collaborate with product and data science to define technical requirements and delivery estimates
• Drive reliability improvements, reducing incident frequency and time-to-recover
• Champion engineering best practices including testing, observability, and documentation

What we’re looking for

• 7+ years of backend engineering experience with strong Python or Go expertise
• Proven experience designing and operating distributed systems at scale
• Experience with event-driven architectures (Kafka, RabbitMQ or similar)
• Strong knowledge of AWS (ECS, RDS, S3, Lambda) or equivalent cloud provider
• Excellent communication skills — you can explain complex technical concepts clearly

• £90,000 – £115,000 base salary depending on experience
